Where and What to Eat in Koh Samet

Most hotels and resorts on Koh Samet operate their own beachside restaurants, which usually serve a selection of Thai and international cuisine. If you prefer more of an island atmosphere and simpler local food, then head over to Sai Kaew Beach, Ao Phai, or Ao Hin Khok (between Sai Kaew and Ao Phai).

Occupying these two popular hangout spots are endless rows of seafood joints, set up in a similar chilled-out style at nightfall, with low, candlelit tables and straw mats laden with triangular pillows and cushions. The food, however, is hit and miss and it’s nearly impossible to tell which place serves great seafood and which is just a plain rip off. The best advice is to ask around or study the menu before you pick a table.

During the day, hawkers roam the more popular beaches, selling everything from fresh fruit, coconut juice, dried squids, som-tam (fiery papaya salad) to beach shawls, fake tattoos and even Thai massage.

Ban Ploi Samet

To get to this floating restaurant, ring the little bell at the resort’s pier then a white raft will arrive to bring you to the islet where the restaurant is located. The restaurant offers a selection of seafood dishes cooked in Thai style, such as seafood fried rice, tom yum soup, spicy seafood salad, steamed mussels and more. Enjoy your meal at the low table with sea views.

Blue Sky Restaurant

Set on a rocky headland overlooking the entire stretch of beach, Blue Sky offers an impressive range of tasty seafood dishes. It is a little pricier than other beachside restaurants in the area, although still in the affordable range, but the amazing view makes it a worthwhile experience.

  • Location: Ao Vong Duen, at Blue Sky Bungalows
  • Price Range: Affordable

Jeb’s Bungalow & Restaurant

This modest restaurant at the beginning of the Ao Phai-Sai Kaew stretch is well known among the backpackers’ circle as an affordable food joint that whips up tasty local and seafood dishes. The all-time favourites here include phad thai, stir-fried chicken with cashew nuts over rice, curried crab over rice and barbecue right on the beach. Grab one of the beachside bamboo chairs and dig in.

  • Location: Ao Phai, upper end where it meets with Sai Kaew Beach
  • Price Range: Affordable

Samet Villa Restaurant

Part of a Swiss-owned resort under the same name, the restaurant offers a large selection of seafood barbecue for dinner. Enjoy dining right on the sand, as low tables and cushioned loungers are neatly laid out to claim the best view of the ocean. Thai and European a la carte dishes are served for breakfast and lunch at the oceanfront terrace.

  • Location: Ao Phai, Samet Villa Resort
  • Price Range: Affordable

Seaview Restaurant at Ao Prao Resort

Catering to a more up-market clientele, this restaurant, part of Ao Prao Resort, serves a tantalising selection of Thai and international dishes from its a la carte menu. Seafood and grilled meat – satays and kebabs – are cooked to order on a barbecue grill. The best thing about dining here though is the sunset view, as the restaurant is set at the water’s edge, on a stretch of ‘private beach’ in front of the resort.

  • Location: Ao Prao, on the west coast
  • Price Range: Pricey
