What to Do at Night in Ayutthaya
While there’s not much to do in Ayutthaya at night, you can definitely tour the city after dark to get a different perspective on all the temple ruins. Spot-lit from the ground and contrasting with the pitch-black sky, the historical sites appear rather otherworldly – both beautiful and surreal.
Apart from night tours and river cruises, Ayutthaya offers little when it comes to nightlife. Drinking is more of a chilling out experience at a guest house than at a dance club or party house. Night markets offer a lineup of drink stalls, with local beers at best. For real nightlife action, you need to take a tuk-tuk outside the city to the area called Grand Market. Here is Ayutthaya’s red light district where you will find a number of karaoke pubs, beer bars with live rock music and bar girls who just refuse to leave you alone.
Another popular hangout place with a mixed crowd of Thais and foreigners, Chang House has been around since 2003. The bar offers local beers, spirits and cocktails, along with Thai, Indian and western food. It has partly indoor and outdoor seating, with a big-screen TV for live sports and live band music every night.

A popular hangout place after dark, this cowboy-themed beer bar offers Thai food and local beers at a reasonable price. It sits in the Grand Market neighbourhood, Ayutthaya’s thriving red light district – a virtually ‘undiscovered’ area among foreign travellers. So, if you come here, expect to rub shoulders with the locals. Live band plays country, rock and Thai pop music every night.

Moon Café’s bright-red façade and big hand-painted cursive signage are hard to miss. This laid-back establishment offers good live band music (after 22:00), of mostly western rock and Thai folk songs, and a range of Thai and western food at reasonable prices. Drinks include beers, spirits and cocktails. The clientele is mostly foreign travellers, backpackers and a few locals.

Street Lamp Bar & Restaurant
Part of the guesthouse of the same name, this non-descript joint looks more like a house than a bar. It has a few wooden tables and parasols out front, with a pool table and bar inside the lobby area. Live solo music, mostly western rock and 60’s and 70’s tunes, begins every night from 20:00 to closing time.

Wang Chan Kasem Night Market
Fronting the Pa Sak River and backed by Wang Chan Kasem Museum, the night market is an ideal place to enjoy a cheap meal with picturesque river views right in the middle of the local scene. At sunset, metal tables and plastic chairs line the market square as diners trickle in. A lineup of food stalls occupy one side of the market, offering everything from ready-to-eat meals to grilled chicken and Halal food, while the other houses a handful of stalls selling clothing and fashion accessories.
